Summary

Janina is a wonderfully eccentric character and I enjoyed seeing how she interacts with the world。 It’s a dark book and full of death in a beautifully bleak setting。 A solid murder mystery with lovely descriptions of nature。 I liked the Blake references, particularly this killer title。 I’m a sucker for a great title! There were a few moments where the almost fairy-tale tone made me lose the plot。 I think Janina is a polarizing character and you will either like her or hate her and that could dic Janina is a wonderfully eccentric character and I enjoyed seeing how she interacts with the world。 It’s a dark book and full of death in a beautifully bleak setting。 A solid murder mystery with lovely descriptions of nature。 I liked the Blake references, particularly this killer title。 I’m a sucker for a great title! I do not understand how this book won a Nobel Prize。 The end。

entendi a filosofia do livro, mas arrastado e detalhista demais。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Read 50% but just could not。 Too much time spent talking about horoscopes and how they influence decisions。 Lady lives in a remote village and is convinced animals are working together to kill people in acts of revenge。

This was a slow read for me because the narrator's "voice" was so unlike anything I've ever read before, but I appreciated the immersive worlds (interior and exterior) the author created。 I can't begin to imagine how she came up with all of the depth and details。 I was surprised by the ending (the solution to the mystery) but didn't find it satisfying。 Still would recommend for those looking for something quite unique。 This was a slow read for me because the narrator's "voice" was so unlike anything I've ever read before, but I appreciated the immersive worlds (interior and exterior) the author created。 I can't begin to imagine how she came up with all of the depth and details。 I was surprised by the ending (the solution to the mystery) but didn't find it satisfying。 Still would recommend for those looking for something quite unique。 。。。more

It's a 3。5/5 for me。 This is honestly the most interesting book I've ever read。 Not only because of the plot but because of the representation。 Polish representation in literature is only seen when there is the mention of World War 2。 I was so glad to hear that FINALLY there is a book set in Poland that is not about World War 2。 It's about something completely different。 This book is thrilling, fun, and exciting。 Amazing writing。 I am definitely recommending this to anyone。 My compliments to the It's a 3。5/5 for me。 This is honestly the most interesting book I've ever read。 Not only because of the plot but because of the representation。 Polish representation in literature is only seen when there is the mention of World War 2。 I was so glad to hear that FINALLY there is a book set in Poland that is not about World War 2。 It's about something completely different。 This book is thrilling, fun, and exciting。 Amazing writing。 I am definitely recommending this to anyone。 My compliments to the chef (Olga Tokarczuk!) 3 1/2 stars。 I feel like I should mark this book as read twice because there are numerous pages I chose to reread because they were just that great。 Five stars for the writing (it felt like every sentence was crafted and labored over), the mood, the main character, the narration, all that stuff。 The astrology sections really slowed my reading pace down because I find astrology to be confusing。 Unfortunately as a murder mystery, the book doesn't really work very well because。。。。((DEFINITE SPOILER 3 1/2 stars。 I feel like I should mark this book as read twice because there are numerous pages I chose to reread because they were just that great。 Five stars for the writing (it felt like every sentence was crafted and labored over), the mood, the main character, the narration, all that stuff。 The astrology sections really slowed my reading pace down because I find astrology to be confusing。 Unfortunately as a murder mystery, the book doesn't really work very well because。。。。((DEFINITE SPOILER ALERT))(view spoiler)[。。。 if you have three people living alone on a plateau and one of them dies under suspicious circumstances, the other two are automatically the suspects。 As soon as the first chapter ended I assumed it was the narrator who killed him。 In the end I wish it was the animals that were the culprits responsible for killing these evil hunters, that would have been a really crazy and enjoyable twist。 This book is basically Fargo meets John Wick but Mr。 Wick is an elderly, astrology loving, PETA supporting, Polish lady (that is not meant to be an insulting description, I found her to be a delightful character!!)。 (hide spoiler)]I do look forward to reading other books by her in the future。 。。。more

While ultimately I'm probably closer to a 4。5, this book had so many 5-star elements for me that this rating only felt right。 Stunning writing—poetry in novel form。 The author picks out both the beauty and the stark normalities of everyday life in a way that makes you rethink them。 When the moments strike, however, she soars far into the world of strange and you don't need to think twice about looking back。 Janina's narration is often laugh-out-loud funny and just as often eerie。 If you want to While ultimately I'm probably closer to a 4。5, this book had so many 5-star elements for me that this rating only felt right。 Stunning writing—poetry in novel form。 The author picks out both the beauty and the stark normalities of everyday life in a way that makes you rethink them。 When the moments strike, however, she soars far into the world of strange and you don't need to think twice about looking back。 Janina's narration is often laugh-out-loud funny and just as often eerie。 If you want to get completely lost inside the thoughts of a character while simultaneously never quite knowing where her head is, this is the book for you。 。。。more

I read this book for my Mystery Book Club。 The author is a Nobel prize winner in literature。 Indeed, there are some beautiful sentences buried in this odd story。 One example: “Low dark clouds had been scudding across the sky all day, and now, late in the evening, they were rubbing their wet bellies against the hills。” But I almost gave up on the book, half way through。 The astrology didn’t interest me, the story dragged, the main character and setting were dreary。 I’m glad I trudged through to t I read this book for my Mystery Book Club。 The author is a Nobel prize winner in literature。 Indeed, there are some beautiful sentences buried in this odd story。 One example: “Low dark clouds had been scudding across the sky all day, and now, late in the evening, they were rubbing their wet bellies against the hills。” But I almost gave up on the book, half way through。 The astrology didn’t interest me, the story dragged, the main character and setting were dreary。 I’m glad I trudged through to the end, though, because there was quite a surprise twist (albeit from an unreliable narrator)。 。。。more

It was a quirky and interesting read told from the perspective of a character that, in most other narratives, would've only been described in a fleeting moment as she was passed by on the street。 Instead of just being the crazy old lady who cares too much about animals, Mrs。 Duszejko strategically positions herself to be at the center of understanding why the local wildlife has been linked to the string of surprising deaths nearby。 Her meddling and persistent wit drive this plow, page by page, l It was a quirky and interesting read told from the perspective of a character that, in most other narratives, would've only been described in a fleeting moment as she was passed by on the street。 Instead of just being the crazy old lady who cares too much about animals, Mrs。 Duszejko strategically positions herself to be at the center of understanding why the local wildlife has been linked to the string of surprising deaths nearby。 Her meddling and persistent wit drive this plow, page by page, like a knife through butter。 。。。more

It’s been a long time since I’ve read a book that changes the way I think。 Not because it presented me with new information, but because it took information I process every day and cast it in a new light。 This book rocked me, made me feel like “I’m not the only one” and will now be on me “re read annually” list。

*This review is for the audiobook*Had this recommended by a friend and was really impressed with how deep this book was。Part mystery, part fairy tale, Tokarczuk weaves a story that celebrates the Polish culture and the importance of listening。 While I feel like the way matters were handled was somewhat extreme, it speaks to the need to take heed of our elders and respect the land we are on。And evidently, there is trust to be found in our horoscopes。

It's a great story with a tremendous plot twist but most of all, the main character is so funny and adorable。 As a reader you empathize with her inmediatly and its really fun and interesting going through the story with her thoughts。 It's a great story with a tremendous plot twist but most of all, the main character is so funny and adorable。 As a reader you empathize with her inmediatly and its really fun and interesting going through the story with her thoughts。 。。。more

She’s got a voice like no other, she’s my mother! It manages to be biting, gloriously funny, and humorously gory。 Creeps in slowly, like a draft at first。 Or what’s that old analogy? Ah yes: the frog in the pot of water as it slowly boils to death。 Or a virus。 A bug creeps in and you don’t notice it until death is at your door。 And, then and only then, will He ask you if you will let Him in。 And you will have to choose。

I read this because of its prize winning reputation。 I had to skip much of the Astrological wordy paragraphs。 The main character is interesting, but not enough to win the big prizes this book has won。The philosophical musings are sometimes worth reading and thinking about。 However, there’s an unevenness about these。 There’s some good humor, too, but overall I’d say it’s an unusual and somewhat unsatisfying novel。

Incredible!! Mystery, astrology, witchiness, commentary on human nature and our effect on others and the world。 A beautiful read
